Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boys were the largest steam locomotives ever built and you'll see them in regular service as they pound westward out of Cheyenne, Wyoming bound for Sherman Hill!

The 4-6-6-4 Challenger 3959 puts on a grand show as we pace this sister engine of Union Pacific's present day excursion engine 3985. At trackside, watch her drivers slip as the giant steam engine slowly moves by. The huge 3-cylinder 4-12-2 9000's are there along with the 4-8-4 800's...sister engines of another famous excursion steamer of today, #844.

First generation E8's put in an appearance as they lead the Union Pacific's "City of Los Angeles", City of San Francisco" and the "Overland Limited" over Sherman Hill...sometimes with steam helpers! We see the unusual Veranda Turbine and then we are treated to a tour of the Cheyenne yard in 1954 with steam galore.

This 50's classic was filmed in 16 mm color from July 1951 to September 1956 and is narrated by the cinematographer himself, Irv August.

But no one is on live yet...

In this over 35 year old program from 1984, it starts with 3 clips from diesels on the union Pacific, then we get to the title card. Afterwards, the first scene shows the challenger on the freight in 2 scenes followed by an introduction by Irving E. August himself. Back to the vintage films however, the men who went on the same trip as Mr. August was medical doctor Alan Patton, les lope, & Jim Williamson. Between Sherman & Buford, a doubleheader with 2 challengers: the scrapped 3800 series in the lead as well as a 3900 series challenger with smoke deflectors. Moments later, another doubleheader is shown with another 3800 series challenger as it is paired with big boy 4021. An early 800 series northern is on the mail train with semaphore signals in the background, followed by some streamlined diesel power on the city of San Francisco. Another 4-8-4 follows behind with a regular passenger train. Back to the same spot where the mail train is, another mail train is shown but it's much shorter. Next, a 5500 series 2-10-2 leads the streamliner uphill, followed by another streamliner. The helper engine has been turned & heads back to Cheyenne. Then we witness another freight on a doubleheader with 2 challengers, as well as an opposite bound freight with a single challenger. Another helper engine runs light, & we witnessed another freight with a 2-10-2 & a challenger doubleheading. One of the 25 big boys heads in the opposite direction on a freight followed by A 2-10-2 running light as well as a nearly missed meet with the caboose on a freight & a passenger train. Another 2-10-2 runs light, & another doubleheader with 2 challengers are included. Lee lope inspects the camera While a big boy handles the freight business. A challenger with smoke deflectors follows behind, & we see another big boy on a fast freight. Moments later, another 3800 series challenger leads a freight while an 800 series northern passes by the semaphore signals while the streamliner follows behind. Another streamliner climbs uphill while a 3800 series challenger runs light as a mountain class 4-8-2 is on passenger duties followed by a sunset.

Next a snowy visit to this region was included in October of 1951 as snow has fallen really early. First a big boy handles the freight while making a meet with the 800 series northern on a passenger train, followed by a doubleheader with challengers, another challenger, a streamliner, another challenger, another doubleheader with a pair of 5500 series 2-10-2s, an early 800 series northern, & concludes with a pair of challengers. Back in Cheyenne, challenger 3957 doubleheads with one of the 8 surviving big boys 4018 on a freight, followed by a short local to Denver with a 2-10-2 & 2 coaches concluding the winter segment.

It's June of 1952 & we see a big boy running light in Buford, followed by a streamliner that is being assisted by a challenger as well as another streamliner with no problems at all While the challenger runs light again. Next up is another streamliner, this time with a 2-10-2 leading. Following behind is an 800 series northern on a passenger train, then we see a 2-10-2 running light while passing by the semaphore signals. Afterwards, a doubleheader is shown with a big boy & & northern on passenger duties followed by another big boy handling the freight businesses. Afterwards, a 3800 series challenger helps the streamliner, While an 800 series northern follows behind as a big boy is on a freight going in the opposite direction. Next another doubleheader is shown with a challenger & a northern on a passenger run. Then comes a northern on the summit of Sherman hill while helping a passenger train with Alco FPA4 diesels. In the same spot, the tail of another freight makes a meet with a doubleheader as it is led by a 4-6-2 Pacific & a big boy. Another doubleheader follows behind with 2 challengers as the Pacific runs light while making a meet. The summit of Sherman hill is at 8300 feet as big boy 4016 arrives with a freight. Then comes the challenger while negotiating a bend on the mainline. In Buford a challenger negotiates the bend while another challenger follows behind, as well as a big boy. Facing the opposite direction comes a doubleheader with a 3800 series challenger & a 3900 series challenger. Another doubleheader follows behind with engine 3543 in the lead & big boy 4000 in the middle. The freight takes slow orders while the streamliner gets the right of way. An 800 series northern follows behind the diesel, & another doubleheader is shown with the 9000 series 4-12-2 & a big boy. The streamliner goes in the opposite direction while another 800 series northern follows behind. Afterwards, the final scene of the June 1952 visit features a doubleheader with a 2-10-2 & a northern.

3 months later in September of 1952, the action begins with the challenger on a freight in a portion between Buford & Sherman. Meanwhile, big boy 4020 runs light while there are 2 scenes of the streamliner. The 800 series northern comes into view, & we see an Alco on a streamliner. Following behind is a doubleheader with a Pacific & a northern on passenger duties, then comes a challenger on a freight. A set of E units handle the freight in the same location while a big boy heads west while approaching the top of the hill. Moments later, a 2-10-2 doubleheads with a challenger on a freight, followed by a big boy, a challenger on a caboose hop, & another big boy on a freight followed by 2-10-2 number 5514 doubleheading with challenger 3946. A big boy goes away with a freight while challenger 3506 follows behind on a local. Moments later, another doubleheader is shown with 5514 once again but it's pulling a different freight with a different challenger. In the late afternoon sun, 2 more challengers are doubleheading on a freight. East of Cheyenne, a 9000 series 4-12-2 is shown on a freight. Heading West comes another 4-12-2 on a freight. In spear, one of the 8 surviving big boys 4012 passes by the original water tower as well as the spout. Moments later, a westbound freight with challenger 3807 comes in from Denver. At the same time, another freight comes to a stop as an 800 series northern passes by. On the Denver local, a Pacific handles 4 coaches while a 3800 series challenger handles the freight. Back at the 2 water towers, big boy 4019 passes by, While it's sister engine: the only operating big boy in the present times 4014 follows behind. Afterwards a big boy arrives in the siding concluding the September 1952 coverage.
