Have you ever wanted to learn to paint your own model steam locomotives? Now you can, and it's easy to learn how! This new video presentation, "How to Paint a Steam Locomotive", shows you, step by step using easy to understand methods, exactly how to paint and finish a steam locomotive.

And we don't just show you once! The TWO DVD set starts with a chapter on tools and techniques to get you headed in the right direction. Next you get three detailed chapters covering three separate painting projects: One, a basic-level Bachmann 2-8-0; Two, how to paint a brass Shay, a two-truck PFM 70-tonner detailed and finished as Sugar Pine Lumber Company #10; and Three, a brass Mikado, a Westside Models of the Minarets & Western Railway #104, an MK-10 class.

Every step is covered , disassembly, cleaning, masking, paint blends and mixing, airbrush use, prep for paint, painting, touch up, decals, final clear finish, the whole works. Nothing is left to chance. This project uses Badger ModelFlex paint, but other brands will work as well.

Plus Bonus DVD: Painting a locomotive is just half of the story. Some modelers prefer the brand-new, clean look for their motive power, but those who want things to look a bit aged and used may find the "Weathering" DVD, a companion to the "How to Paint a Steam Locomotive" DVD, very useful.

In this DVD, we show you all the steps we took to complete the weathering on the Bachmann 2-8-0 and the M&WRy #104 Mikado. Paint washes, weathering powder and airbrushing are all covered in detail as we add a touch of age and road-weary miles to these engines.

(For a more complete weathering how-to video, see "Steam Loco Weathering Clinic," also available on this site)

Total run time: About 42 minutes.

The DVD Set was good valve and the provided a basic understand of painting train models with water based paint. However, more experienced modelers would prefer more detail, particularly where finishing brass models is concerned. For these experienced modelers there are better videos available.

Additional remarks by DanT:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

Not detailed enough (more like not at all). For example applying decals. I think most people can apply a decal to a tender tank, why not SHOW the number plate or the headlight decals being applied? Project progresses without explanation several times throughout each model. Close up of each model at the conclusion leave a lot to be desired about the quality of the paint jobs. The broken up nature of the content was very unnatural and kept pointing me to the other included dvd's very hard to get immersed in the projects that way. Overall, not worth the money in my opinion. Serious modelers who want to learn new skills or techniques should skip this one.

Additional remarks by Lance:
Narration: Just enough.
Image quality: A little rough around the edges.
DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it.
Recommend to others? Definitely not!.

I bought the DVD because I want to buy an airbrush to paint small 1/72 scale military tanks. Airplane painting guides look to clean, so I thought painting weathered beatten tanks would ba lot like painting small weathered trains. Your DVD was very helpful on what tools and items I needed to get and technics on how to painting realistic looking weather beatten trains/tanks/equipment. Your DVD was very good and helpful. Just what I was looking for. Thank You.

George Peck.
