Today, it's a fallen flag railroad, but it was once one of the most unique rail lines in the United States. The Milwaukee Road, which ran from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest, operated as an electrified line in Montana up until June of 1974. Photographer Ted Pope captured the last 4 days of the electric operations before the line switched to full diesel operations. The territory you will see in this video runs between Deer Lodge and Harlowton, Montana. Several scenes feature in-cab footage in the Little Joes as the trains travel through Sixteen Mile Canyon and the scenic Jefferson Canyon. They're places so remote, you can only see them by rail!
Get ready to enjoy historic footage of these magnificent electric locomotives pulling heavy freight across the beautiful Montana Mountain landscape!
For Milwaukee Road fans, this era represents the Milwaukee at its best! Be a part of this historic time period and enjoy the great action of The Milwaukee Road in Montana!

Running time 72 minutes, color/silent films with music and narration.

There should have been a lot more narration...especially such as what location are we at, time of day, some history of that area, what was the name of the crew, the train's number, tell us the engines' history, tell us about the cars. The music also was very wrong for this train video.

Too much of the video is seeing the train go up the hill, down the hill, across the bridge, or being chased from the highway with little or no narration. Boring!

Additional remarks by Keith:
Narration: Could have used more.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

I'll watch anything with a pantograph or a third rail. So when this dvd was on sale a little while back, I grabbed a copy. For the most part, I enjoyed the images of the "Little Joes" as they traversed the Montana landscape. There's some nice views of the electric locos up close, so you can examine the interesting details they carried. The image quality varied, but for the most part, was a little fuzzier than I would have liked. It looks like if the films were not brought forward now, they would probably soon disintegrate and disappear forever. On the plus side, C-Vision did a good job in color and contrast correction. Some of the scenes show the locomotives at a far distance - but it's the closest the photographers could have gotten to the trains, given the topography. Musical score was good; but perhaps some more variety could have been implemented. A map or two could have been helpful. Also, narration was actually somewhat lacking; maybe some "storytelling" could have been added to inform the viewer of the history of the unique electrification of the line shown (and to break up the music at times). All in all, a good DVD for Milwaukee or electric fans. Not perfect, but certainly not bad, either.

Anything doing with the Milwaukee is of interest to me. I grew up a block from the main line in SE MN. I watched the slow change over to diesel in my home area and saw The streamliner Hiawathe #2 on it's maiden trip. During my travels in the 40's, 50's and 60's it was my pleasure to ride electrically powered Milwaukee trains in Washington- Montana area. I enjoy your work with the short videos and watch all of them.
