The show begins with Rio Grande (D&RGW) 2-8-2 number 483 on a October 1961 trip from Alamosa with fall colors. We then see some action with two of the K-28 class engines on the Silverton Line, with the engines split for the high bridge. Warren Scholl rode this trip which featured a few runbys along the way. A helper (doubleheader) is used on the return trip from Chama to Cumbres.

Now to Oregon and Washington for Spokane, Portland and Seattle 4-8-4 number 700, on what we think is the final trip. Scenes appear to be east of Portland along the Columbia River. There is also a trip with Northern Pacific 2-8-2 number 1911 to Battleground, and trip with 4-8-4 number 2626 (which was originally the engine Timken used for its new roller bearings, before NP purchased it. This may be the last trip with 2626, but we are not sure. It appears to be from Seattle. Another Northern Pacific 4-8-4 number 2686 is ridden from St. Paul to Staples, Minnesota in the summer of 1957. There are some trackside views including a runby, and servicing in Staples with an 0-8-0 switch engine. With 700 you see 3 different 4-8-4's.

There is a three day excursion from the Bay Area in California on North Western Pacific with primarily an assortment of 4-6-0 locomotives and a couple of side trips to branch lines. This is a scenic segment along the Eel River and other locations on a trip that was ridden, and included some photo runbys.

Santa Fe 4-6-4 number 3450 is seen and ridden behind on a trip that went to Oakdale where Sierra took over with engines 34 and 36 for the rest of the day. This was on October 19, 1952. 3450 is a great looking Hudson. 34 and 36 are 2-8-0 wheel arrangement engines, and neither has operated for many years. 3450 is on display at the fairgrounds in Pomona, California.

We also see an excursion on the Santa Maria Valley Railroad with engine 2-8-2 #21 in 1954. The groups took the Southern Pacific to Guadeloupe and we see SP 4-8-4 4440 departing that station before seeing some nice coverage of #21.

There are also brief looks at Southern Pacific 2-6-0 number 1711, and 3 excursion appearances of Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4460. One trip is the Fresno Flyer, and another is the final trip on the SP with steam on a 2-day trip to Reno from Oakland in 1958. This GS-6 locomotive was famous for pulling several excursions near the end of the steam era, and is preserved at the National Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, Missouri.

There are also a few excursions on the Western Pacific which include mostly 4-6-0 number 94, but also a trip that was doubleheaded with 94 and 2-8-2 334. These trips were in 1954 and 1956. This is a nice segment with a lot of trackside views, and a little bit of riding as well. There is some nice pacing of the doubleheader in the Oakland area on the return trip.

This is quite a collection of material from a variety of photographers and locomotives. All this is new material, not duplicating any other dvd's. Color with narration and background music for these silent original films. 65 Minutes

This program features mostly future Famous survivors as well as a couple of appearances that were also shown in some of Gregs vintage steam programs. Heres how it goes: first comes the Rio Grande from September 29-October 1 1961 from Alamosa to Silverton, through the now gone Chama to Durango line with 483 on the point as well as 486 in Chama. The next day a pair of the 470 series engines heads to Silverton. This has an interesting synthesizer though. On the last day October 1 1961, we get a look at the Durango yard, as well as riding on the line plus 491. Next we head to the northwestern region as multiple future famous locomotives are shown starting with SP&S 700 from Portland to wishram on May 20 1956. Next comes 3 Northern Pacific Engines which 2 of them were shown in the 1998 NP farewell to steam video, but on different trips. Such as 1911 at battleground Washington, Timken Engine 2626 from Seattle to Cle Elum in 1957 is also included. And also concludes a trip to the Midwest, with 2686 from the twin cities to staples Minnesota in 1957 by perry Becker, and see an unidentified 0-8-0 switcher at the coal tower, plus some early diesels on freight service. As well as a short June 1958 visit to the Duluth scrap yard. On May 23-25 1952, we head to California to see the northwestern pacifics own engine 183 Along scotia bluffs. A meet with an early diesel powered freight is shown as well as 4-6-0 112 (now on display in Sacramento) pulls the train tender first on the arcata branch. On the Samoa to crannell branch, Hammond lumber company 15 pulls its own train on a cloudy day. Today that engine is still on display with us as well. Neither 178 and/or 181 reside with us today unfortunately. A brave shot on the bridge and tunnel at island mountain over the eel river. Heading south, we head to the atchison Topeka and Santa Fe on Cajon Pass beginning with a doubleheader pulled by a 4-8-4 and a 2-10-2 shot by bill Bowen in the 40s. Next we head to New Mexico and see a westbound passenger train Pulled by Alco FPA-4s passing a steam locomotive in a siding. On raton Pass, we witnessed a triple header climbing eastbound and also see an October 1952 special with Hudson 3450 performing a runby at Muir trestle. Plus some meets are included as well as some riding footages, then we head to the Sierra railway at oak dale with mikado 36 pulling the special. Sister engine 34 is on the wye and also doubleheads to tualome Over the foothills. On March 14, 1954 we witnessed southern pacific action as it pulls the Santa Maria valley line beginning with 4-8-4 4440 pulling the special in the opening scene, and see SMV 25 backing up for an unexpected wheelslip, and see some selected photo runbys plus some Street running at the Railroads namesake town is also included, and on the last day of steam specials for the SMV, we see an extreme close up of Engine 21, and weve been told that notable cartoonist Walt Disney was on this special. More SP action is shown beginning with a May 1958 trip as one of the few SP steam survivors 2-6-0 1744 is waiting for Northern 4460 to arrive, these trips were almost the same from the sp steam fantrips dvd from 2012, but with a different photographer. The following October, 4460 pulls the Fresno flyer, as it turned out to be one of the last steam specials on the southern pacific. There is one instrumental piece that has an interesting synthesizer though. The official farewell to SP steam was on October 18-19 1958 from Oakland to Reno and back. The coverage begins in Sacramento. Note the wheelslip on the engine as well as a rude stranger almost blocking the view. Some early diesels help 4460 on the western slope of donner pass to trucker. Finally we witnessed Western pacific action as 4-6-0 94 pulls an Oakland to feather falls trip in October 1954 Over altamont pass, the feather river canyon with logging loco 3 at land hauling planks of wood, and also on the feather river railway journey. Plus see mikado 334 on a March 1956 journey, and concludes with a doubleheader with 94 from Oakland to Orville in June of 1957. Like many of Gregs vintage steam programs, they have background music by gene Michael productions, and like many of Gregs 2017 programs minus the original 1987 editing of the 1218 rebuilding video, this was narrated by Brian sellers.
