Yikes! Now don't get me wrong, I totally love ol' 4449, but 2.25 hours of watching that magnificent 4-8-4 steamin' down the tracks wore a bit thin after about ten minutes. I also noticed early on that the cars, although painted in the Daylight colors, are actually not original Daylight [lack of corrugated side panels tipped me off]. Well the 4449 is one of my favorite steam engines still running today!!So I could never get enough daylight video and this is truly a special DVD because I was track side when this trip was taking place so to have this footage is great for my collection!! I recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys a piece of history as great as this on its way to the World's Fair in 1984 also if you were around the hairstyles and clothing on the spectators will bring you back to those days gone past which to me seems like yesterday!!!wow what great memories!!!!! 20th Anniversary Daylight Combo DVD VideoRailsFan on 2009-12-25 09:11:31.

Video Rails does it again as it brings full coverage of Southern Pacific's 4449 Daylight from Portland, Oregon, to New Orleans, Louisiana, and back. Included are interviews with the engineer, fireman, and second engineer. An added bonus is the engineer's explanation of the steam engine's restoration. The other half of this combo DVD is Pentrex's first video ever produced. This section covers only the route from Portland to New Orleans. Pentrex doesn't interview the crew of 4449, however. Yet it brings a longer coverage of the route than Video Rails did. I actually prefer the Video Rails version over the Pentrex version. However, I have enjoyed both of these videos. In world�s fair daylight 1984 made by video rails, The program starts with Donald Harris narrating a short montage of 8mm and 16mm film which was eventually later used on the VR Classic Collector�s series in 1988, 1989, and 1991, and the SP cab forward and Daylight collections from pentrex. Donald Harris narrated the brief history of the regular SP daylight in the 30s-50s, as well as 4449 itself. Then comes a one shot look of 4449 wearing its American freedom train paint in the 70s, and also back to its original red and orange livery in 1981 as it heads to Sacramento for the grand opening of the California state railroad museum. The title of the video begins as the camera zooms out when the crossing bells keep dinging, as 4449 whistles by. Afterwards 4449 engineer Doyle McCormack welcomes the viewer telling us that 4449 has been at the same spot in the since been demolished Brooklyn Yard roundhouse and turntable. Then comes the still shots of 4449�s rebuild before its epic transcontinental journey to the Deep South, while there is some background commentary being played as well. The trackside chase begins as 4449 had already left Portland behind passing by a highway and a lake. Note the still camera clicks offscreen. The date is May 5, 1984. Afterwards a map of 4449�s journey is shown as the engine rolls through Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, And Louisiana. At a total run of 7000 miles round trip, it was the longest single steam excursion in American steam railroading history. Through the mountains, 4449 whistles through a bridge and over the river. Next it whistles by another crossing this time through a grassy field. In California, a pair of the short lived daylight painted freight diesels help 4449 over one of California�s popular hotspots, the Tehachapi Loop. At the loop a pair of blue and yellow Santa Fe diesels wait on a siding to let 4449 pass by. As always Doyle is a lean mean whistle blowing machine whenever crowds gather around at random locations. Once the diesels are removed, 4449 is still whistling as always as it rolls through the desert. The date is May 12 (5 years before the worst train crashes of the 80s) and 4449 is rolling through Soledad canyon as it approaches Los Angeles to participate the City�s 100th birthday. A still image of 1984 Olympic unit 7347 is on display. Afterwards a quartet of SP diesels help 4449 as it climbs into Beaumont hill. Then 4449 is alone and highballing through the desert. On May 16 (6 years before muppet creator Jim Henson & Jazz singer Sammy Davis Jr ended their own lives), something was wrong underneath the locomotive. It is revealed that a spring retaining bolt was broken. It took several hours to locate the 50 ton jack to raise 4449�s Driving wheels for the repairs to be made. Even the engineer must assist for help as well. After the repairs, 4449 is on the move once again. At agua caliente Arizona, 4449 passes by since been removed semaphore signals back in the regular steam days. While 4449 was visiting Phoenix, Fireman Dick Yeager explains the operations of how the fire of the locomotive is controlled. 4449 departs Phoenix on May 18, as the red and orange northern heads for its eastbound trip through the Deep South. First the locomotive whistles through the crossing, then it crosses over on a girder bridge with wooden trestles, and whistles with a waiting freight on a siding. Next the engine picks up the pace as it crosses another girder bridge, then whistles through as always. Again Doyle is a lean mean whistle blowing machine. 4449 is still rolling through the Arizona desert with the Dragoon mountains in the background. An extreme close up look at the flowers are shown as 4449 passes by another set of semaphore signals as the blades move into the upper position. Moments after crossing into the New Mexico State line, 4449 is rolling through the peloncillo mountains. Next it crosses the state border again, this time in Texas with the Del Norte Mountains As it highballs through the cowboy state. Another look at the map is shown, and after that, several still images of 4449 meeting a westbound freight at the Huey P. Long Bridge is shown, as well as the world�s fair itself with Union Pacific 844 that was renumbered to 8444 from 1962-1989, as it traveled all the way from Cheyenne Wyoming. The now 35 year old event, started on May 12 (5 years before the cajon pass crashes) and ended on November 11 a couple of days after WWII Veteran Ronald Regan won the re-election. With 4449�s week long visit to the fair completed, the long trip home has officially begun as it passes by an eastbound freight, then whistles through the Texas desert. In Texas, a dragging equipment detector brings 4449 to an emergency stop. After some quick repairs, it continues west to Tucson Arizona through the Deserts of Texas and New Mexico. A cab ride onboard the daylight is shown as Doyle takes the controls of the locomotive while Jack Wheelehan controls the locomotive fueling supply. Some scenes during the cab ride includes from the top of the tender, and also out of the window on each side. After the cab ride, 4449 highballs through the desert as always. Then it curves through the Dos Cabezas mountains in Arizona. At the 30 minute mark of the video, Jack explains the controls of the locomotive on how 4449 stops and goes. Afterwards, it is already June 15, 1984, as 4449 leaves Tucson heading for Los Angeles over Beaumont hill. Some onboard footage from behind the locomotive is included. In Phoenix, the crowds gather to watch the team do some maintenance on the locomotive. Afterwards, 4449 curves away from Phoenix as it whistles through the crossing. Note the southern pacific name on the leg of the railroad crossing 2 tracks sign. Then comes the pacing of the daylight. Note the semaphore signals going up as 4449 passes by. A brief slow motion clip of an extreme close up look at the piston valves are included as 4449 picks up the pace, and through the desert into California. At coyote wash, everyone got off the train to watch 4449 performing a photo runby as it goes over the girder bridges. Once all the passengers got back on board, 4449 continues the trip to Los Angeles, and the semaphore signal switches to the upper position as the locomotive passes by. Back in LAUPT, some still images are shown, as 4449 is back on its original regular service line along the Pacific Ocean to the California state railroad museum in Sacramento. First it leaves mission tower. Then comes the helicopter angles of 4449 rolling alongside the Pacific Ocean, and through the desert with the mountains in the background. Today it is a freight only line as well as Amtrak�s coast starlight. Speaking of Amtrak, this footage was recorded way before the government created railroad�s worst president Dick Anderson created the No Steam giants forever policy along with 611, 3751, 261, 2926, 630, 4501, 765, 700, And of course 4449. After the helicopter segment, we are at San Luis Obispo, as short live daylight painted freight only diesel locomotive 7342 assists 4449 up the steep hills of La Cuesta grade. With the diesel removed, 4449 is highballing for home, but it�ll have to make a stop at the old Sacramento railroad depot. Prior to that, the engine goes under the highway bridge at Salinas, then comes a quick zoom out chase at it stops at San Francisco before the city by the bay itself has an earthquake 5 years later, as well as other things that turn for the worst themselves. Leaving San Fran behind, 4449 crosses through Niles Junction over various bridges, such as the small one at Niles and a long one at Martinez. At the California state railroad museum, a still image of 4449 and the only Daylight painted Diesel #6051 is shown as well as Union Pacific 4466 already fired up for the occasion. But unfortunately it didn�t operate the Sacramento southern, nor hearing its own bell and whistle. Before heading home to Portland, Doyle explains the locomotive Mechanics, and the brief history of 4449 itself. Afterwards, 4449 leaves Sacramento for its continued journey home to Portland as it rolls through the cascade mountains, over Shasta lake, and various rivers along the way. A water stop had to be made in Black Butte before crossing the state line one last time. As always, the tender is overflowing with water. Afterwards 4449 highballs for home, but before that happens, the last helpers of 4449�s longest journey assists the engine as it enters and exits one of the tunnels through the Oregon side of the cascade mountains. Finally the locomotive is home at last after participating in the nearly 2 month long visit Deep South. The date is June 24, 1984. Once all of the passengers got off the coaches and say thank you to Doyle McCormack & his team, it is time for 4449 to be put into storage at the since been demolished Brooklyn Yard Roundhouse & turntable with high hood unit 4389 pushing 4449 inside.
