Jim Terrell filmed several copper operations in AZ, NM and TX. He was allowed to film the operations from the mine pits, the crushers, the smelters and to the loading of the final product into rail cars. Each facility had its own rail line to connect with the class 1 roads, mostly the Southern Pacific. There were extensive narrow gauge railroads that moved materials intra-plant. We visit the Phelps Dodge Morenci Mine, American Smelting and Refining, Inspiration Consolidated Copper, Magma Arizona, Kennecott and more. These operations used Baldwin and ALCo diesels as well as an assortment of "critters" in plant. Oh, yes! The wild desert scenery is magnificent. One Hour and forty minutes, all color, sound in camera and informative narration. Watch for volume 2, coming soon.

Here is a most fascinating duo of productions. The industrial switching and operations covered is astonishing even down to seldom seen plant and smelter narrow gauge lines. The wide open spaces of Arizona aid with the scenery. The narration helps considerably to piece the subject together. This is computer restored film with original sound but it plays quite well. The SP Sunset Route mainline makes an occasional appearance as does an ATSF shortline.

Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.

Living in Arizona for 20 years, some of these mines have been visited but not in the era of this DVD. To be able to witness the copper mines and railroads that long ago and with the information provided was very valuable. One hopes the Volume II will not be long in coming and hopefully with more additional visits to sites like Apache powder, etc.
Thanks and keep up the good work!

Really something different! Enjoyable from start to finish. Unique subject matter with interesting variety. If U are looking for industrial railroading, this is a must have. I would note that when I first played the disc, I experienced many glitches-however on using a different machine, the disc played perfectly. I am absolutely looking forward to volume 2!
