B & O Odyssey Vol 1
Linking 13 Great States with the Nation - that was the slogan of the B&O Railroad. Step back to the 1950s and '60s to see what made the Baltimore & Ohio one of the all-time great railroads!
The action takes place in Ohio and Pennsylvania, starting in 1954 when steam was king. Articulated locomotives, Mikes, Big Sixes, and many other types of steam power roll past the camera. You'll catch the action at the Lorain ore dock where steam trains unload ships laden with iron ore and will also spend time watching the steam switchers at Rossford Yard in Toledo. Then you'll get a look at E- and F-units and Geeps in the classic B&O paint scheme.
The famous Cincinnatian, which ran from Detroit to Toledo on NYC track and to Cincinnati on the B&O line, is extensively covered. You'll see it under steam and on many runbys headed by diesels. Other passenger trains appear, including the Shenandoah and Nickel Plate's Westerner. B&O blue and gray, lightning stripe New York Centrals, C&O yellow and blue, Bessemer orange, and other colorful fallen flags fill the screen with excitement.
Volume 1 of B&O Odyssey, which covers the years 1954 to 1964, is the first in a multi-volume series based on the works of noted railroad photographer Emery Gulash. Collect the whole series!

The odyssey resumes in Michigan, shortly after B&O had merged with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. Motive power and rolling stock of both railroads are frequently seen intermingled. We catch the Cincinnatian and other passenger trains on the C&O route between Detroit and Toledo, including the towers at Wayne Junction, Romulus, and Carleton.
Moving east we visit Connellsville, Pennsylvania and Brunswick, Maryland where freight traffic is heavy. Motive power includes F-units and brand new GP30s. At Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, perhaps the most scenic spot on the B&O, we see both passenger and freight trains making their daily runs. Coal movements are captured at Hancock, West Virginia. Returning westward we enjoy freight action in Pennsylvania and Ohio, then return to Michigan for lots more passenger action.

This two DVD set was very enjoyable. There is a lot of American history captured in these videos. Just seeing those old autos from the 50s and 60s was a treat to me.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the video, considering how long ago it was shot and the technology of the times.
They seem to go a little overboard on the "Cincinnatian." It would have been better if they had included some other trains and other locations.
I consider this set to be worth what I paid for it and I will almost certainly watch these DVDs again from time to time.

In Volume 1 Made in 2000, this was the second Pentrex DVD ever released (the first being steam across the Pacific Northwest with SP 4449 in black paint). The show starts with steam action in 1954 and 1955 only, but there is plenty of early diesel action during 1958, 1962, 1963, And 1964.
In part 2, there are multiple visits to B&O territory with great early diesel action throughout the 60s. Which includes 1964 action at Delray Michigan, a trio of 1965 variety at the towns of Romulus Michigan, Toledo Ohio, And Connellsville Pennsylvania which is at the western side of sand patch grade. Plus a short 1966 visit to harpers ferry West Virginia, a 1967 quickie at college Pennsylvania, and the show concludes with a trio of 1968 variety at Plymouth and Wayne Michigan, and concludes the final year?s of the B&O before it was merged with the chessie system in the 70s and 80s at Carleton Michigan.
