Union Pacific 4-8-4 number 844 was the last new steam locomotive built for the Union Pacific Railroad. She was one of forty-five 4-8-4's used in regular passenger service on the Union Pacific. The 844 was never retired, and has been on the Union Pacific Locomotive Roster her entire life. In 1989, she set out on her busiest season in years. Kicking off the schedule was a special train out of Omaha, Nebraska. 844 pulled a freight train across Nebraska on her way to Omaha. It was the longest and heaviest freight train she had pulled since 1960.

About a month prior to departing Cheyenne Wyoming for the 50th anniversary of Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal in Southern California to meet up with Southern Pacific Daylight 4449 from Portland Oregon, 8444 during its twilight months before the renumbering back to its original number 844 prior to the GP30 diesel's retirement, operated freight & passenger trains from Cheyenne to Omaha Nebraska & Council Bluffs Iowa in March of 1989. Not only was Berkshire Productions there for 8444's March 1989 trips, but also an out of business video company from Colorado called Gandy Dancer Productions were also on hand to witness the only operating steam engine in America to never go into retirement. Some of these scenes were also shown in a couple of children's shows by TM Books & Video, mostly in "All About Trains".
