The congestion generated by heavy BNSF and UP trains moving freight in and out of the ports led to construction of a 20-mile long consolidated route linking the railroads container facilities near Los Angeles to the harbor area. The central feature of the Corridor is the Trench, a 33-foot deep, 50-foot wide, 10-mile long cut that carries trains below grade crossings. With an average close to 70 trains a day, the Corridor is a busy place, as you ll see on three separate outings.
Your first trip begins near Eastern Avenue on a cool, overcast October morning in 2007. After passing Hobart Tower, you enter the Trench at 25th Street, return to ground level 10 miles later in Compton, ending your trip at Delores Yard. Your second trip takes you from Watson Yard to Terminal Island where your consist will traverse a giant balloon track to keep your lead unit on the point before coupling to a waiting train. For the third trip, you ll depart from Pier 400 for the return trip back through the Trench. This time the camera is mounted on the second unit to give you a different perspective. The highlights of your trips include appearances by Pacific Harbor Line locomotives, a passing UP stack train in the corridor, and more. This is a railroading adventure like no other!

I thought this was an excellent video. It's my first "At the Throttle" series and will definitely not be my last. I watched the Alameda Corridor under construction for the longest time but, my job took me away from the area before the corridor was finished so this was a real treat for me! I was finally able to see the end results of this massive undertaking and this video really brings to light just how awesome this corridor is and why it was so badly needed. If you have a problem with watching trains from the aspect of viewing out the windshield or off to one side as it rolls along the rails, then you probably won't enjoy this video? But, if you're like me and absolutely love "everything trains", then you will definitely want this DVD in your railroad library! The quality of both image and sound are excellent in this video however, I thought it could have used a bit more narration in some areas so the viewer had a better idea of where they are in the trip along the corridor. I give this video 5 stars in my books and I can't imagine ever getting tired of watching this DVD???

At the Throttle Vol. # 4 is another fine production. Following more the format of volume # 3, this video is filmed in several different locations, with the camera view in several different locations on the engine. The narration continues to be somewhat limited, as we hear the natural sounds of the train, and passing trains, as our journey rolls along. Late in the video, with the camera mounted in a different location, we finally hear some crew cab chatter. This video takes us through locations that railroad fans would never be privileged to see otherwise. 2 trips through the Alameda Corridor, and a pass through Terminal Island and a departure from Pier 400. The sites and view points are excellent. The camera angles add variety. When I watched the 1st part, through the Alameda Corridor, I was somewhat disappointed. There was no other trains seen in "the trench" in either direction, so all we see is 10 miles of triple track, straight ahead. Then the video really gets good as we head for Terminal Island. Near the end of the video, it is race time with a Union Pacific stack in "the trench". This is railroading at it's finest. In the end, I knew that this is one of the best video productions that Pentrex has ever done. It is highly recommended as a "must have".

Dear Pentrex,
I am returning this video for a refund. Here's why:
1. The video is not what it claims to be. The viewer is not "at the throttle" at all -- in fact, he's not even in the cab. He's riding on the coupler or attached to the cab roof.
2. Because there's no flexibility in the camera view, all of the interesting parts of the trip are invisible: trackside industries, and especially activities at the port. I suspect they might not have been allowed to do a more interesting video for security reasons, but it shouldn't be described as more than it is.
3. And whose idea was it to show minute after hypnotizing minute of corridor running? In one segment,light engines run out for many minutes of passing crossties, stop, and back up for many minutes of disappearing crossties. What's up with that?

This DVD was produced to a high standard but staring strait ahead without and camera shots inside the cab (Except inside the corridor from inside the cab)of the engineer at work and conversation between the crew and dispatcher detracts from the production. Suggest that this format should be marketed in Blu Ray format.

Too bad the last portion of the program had the camera on the second engine. For over 20 minutes you could see the back of the lead engine and a concrete wall.

Not really a cab ride in the true sense and most definitely NOT, AT THE THROTTLE! Your view for the most part is from what looks like the front deck and lower. Now how is that At The throttle? The last part of this DVD was not bad. You have a view from the second locomotive and then finishing up with a view from inside the cab, pacing along with a UP stack train. In a way the last 15 minutes are the best and yet disappointing! "That's it?....Man it was just getting really good"!

I live by the Alameda Corridor, and was in the area when they built it, and on the streets now when the trains travel it, so this was a MUST HAVE!!, it is over two hours, if you think there are some slow segments, just fast forward a bit and great action will be back, very unique, I call it the 8th wonder of the world. If this is your interest you will luv it!!

This DVD is okay if you are not tired. The long ride through the corridor is kind of long with nothing but a wall to look at for several minutes. There are some areas that are interesting and the filming is great. Not too fond of looking at the side of the cab taking up most of the picture though. I won't watch this one as much as the other cab rides.
