Explore a living piece of the American West deep in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad traverses forty-five miles of the most rugged and beautiful country in North America. It attracts hundreds of thousands of riders annually and has often served as a Hollywood movie set.

This program begins with a tour of the roundhouse, shops, and turntable as classic D&RGW steam locomotives are readied for their runs. Enjoy a front-row seat to this incredible scenic line from the cab of a former White Pass and Yukon diesel. Ride with the crew on an Alco K-28 steam engine and watch these cherished "sport models" participate in fall and winter photo excursions.

As a bonus, we have included rare footage of the D&SNG hauling logs for a wintertime fire mitigation project with the Colorado State Forest Service.

This is your ticket to explore a true American treasure!

Located on the route of the Rio Grande Narrow Gauge's Silverton Branch on the western end of the 4th Division, millions of people young & old came year after year to ride these old-fashioned steam engines & on rare occasions, newly acquired White Pass & Yukon diesels since the 2018 wildfires which forced the railroad to convert all of their steam engines from coal to oil. Plus there are vintage films from 1959 by Mr. Raymond Pelot. Besides the angles from the ground, in the cabs, & onboard, there are also drone angles from the sky, as these trips were filmed in all 4 seasons of the year. Steam engines 473, 476 (which was used in the filming of a Hollywood movie with Kevin Costner in May of 2024), 478, 480, 481, 482, 484 on the Cumbres & Toltec from another 7Idea show Over Cumbres Pass, 486, 487, 489, & 493 which was originally numbered 1105 are included, as well as a visit from 2-8-0 number 340 that was traveling from the Ghost Town & Callico Railroad at Knotts Berry Farm in Southern California. From Preparations at the Durango Roundhouse to Double-Headers, to a diesel cab ride on WP&Y 106, to even a winter freight special, this is a nifty add-on to other 7Idea Rio Grande titles: Over Cumbres Pass & Steam & Snow-Rotary OY on Cumbres Pass.
