In celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary, the Union Pacific Steam Program embarked on a coast to coast tour with the largest operating steam locomotive in the world, Big Boy number 4014 leading a special train to select cities across America.
7idea Productions covered the eastbound leg of the west-coast tour in the spring of 2026, as the steam special traveled nearly 1,200 miles from Sacramento, California to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
We followed Big Boy through the rain-soaked Feather River Canyon, across the remote desert of Nevada, the Great Salt Lake of Utah, over the Wasatch Mountains, and across the windswept plains of Wyoming.
Along with the 4014, the historic train included two heritage diesels: UP1616 honoring President Abraham Lincoln, who signed the Railway Act in 1862, creating the Union Pacific, and the America 250 locomotive numbered the UP1776.

Aside from the angles of Aaron Bentsein with informative narration, there are also some footages of 4014 that was captured by Christian Schultz. Will there ever be some more future length DVDs & Blu-Rays on 4014's Eastern half of the celebrating 250 years of America tour that includes making a month long visit in Pennsylvania with silent surviving engine 4012 in Scranton, side-by-side races with Reading T1 2102 on the Reading & Northern, & rumbling through Altoona's mighty Horseshoe Curve by what's left of today's producers at this point? Who knows.

As part of the 250 celebration of our country, Union Pacific has sent Big Boy 4014 for a Coast to Coast tour. There are scenic locations that are worth visiting such as Feather River Canyon in California and the Palisade Canyon in Nevada. I’m not a fond of drone coverage but there were few replays of the run-by on ground level as the 4014 whistles by. Stay tuned for the East Coast tour when it comes out on video in the future.
