Southern Pacific steam abounds in this collection of rare color films from the 1930s to the 1950s. Originally released as part of the Video Rails Classic Collectors' Series, these valuable films have now been combined on one DVD, bringing you the best of SP's steam era. Included are:

Southern Pacific 1941 (30 Minutes)
Spectacular scenery sets the tone for great shots of SP locomotives in San Francisco, Oakland, Roseville, and on Donner Pass. You'll see 2-8-0s, 2-8-2s, 4-6-2s, 4-8-2s, 2-10-2s, Cab Forwards, and even SP ferry boats in action. The extraordinary color footage used in this show was shot between 1936 and 1941.

Southern Pacific Steam (30 Minutes)
Filmed in the 1950s, these images capture commuter trains on the San Francisco Peninsula, freight and passenger operations in the San Joaquin Valley, mail trains on the Coast Line, and more. The locomotive types range from 0-6-0s to Cab Forwards, and the variety in this priceless retrospective is awesome.

Southern Pacific: The Coast Line (30 Minutes)
Experience the thrill of Daylights racing up the California coast from Los Angeles to King City in the 1950s. You'll also view Black Widow F-units and Cab Forwards pulling long, heavy freight trains. Special highlights feature Cab Forwards in helper service and doubleheaders with steam and early diesels. It's an amazing collection!

Video Rails produced more Classic Collector's Series videos, and these are very enjoyable. The first one documents Southern Pacific's operations in San Francisco and points along Donner Pass between 1936 and 1941. This is excellent vintage footage. I have enjoyed this one very much, especially the rare scenes of the "City of San Francisco" in its earlier years. The second section views SP's steam locomotives during the late 1950's. These old scenes will never be repeated. Again, I have enjoyed this video as well. The third one shows SP's Coast Line with steam and early diesels. This is Southern California before its rapid urbanization. I also like this video. I definitely recommend this collection to those interested in SP and/or steam locomotives.

Additional remarks by VideoRailsFan:
Narration: Just enough.

This was my first SP steam/early diesel video purchase and I must say I loved it. Not knowing much about what I was watching the narration really helped out. Looking forward to getting my hands on a few more DVDs like this one.

With Mike Bergers beautiful narration, this 3 in 1 combo features great action with a mix of steam and diesel powered trains in the west. If youre wondering where they come from, heres the revealed years: the 1941 video was the first volume from 1988, the steam video was volume 3 from 1989, and the coast line was volume 5 in 1991. The theme song was excellent and so too have the engines.
