"Norfolk Southern - Tie & Surfacing Super Gang #2"

Crosstie replacement is a vital infrastructure maintenance project, but must be done without disrupting train schedules.

In high traffic lanes where work windows are short, Norfolk Southern deploys its "Tie and Surfacing Super Gang".

An army of skilled crew members equipped with high-production, very specialized machines are deployed;
old worn out ties are replaced, correct track geometry is restored and rock ballast is properly contoured.

This rehabilitation is to be completed in the shortest period of time in order to keep the NS mainline open for traffic.

In this program will show this process, identify the unique machines and the procedure to achieve these goals.

A good video but with absolutely no narrative. It would have been nice to know just what was happening, and especially why it was happening . (I am more interested in the hows and whys of railroading vs watching trains and noting locomotive nomenclature.) Compared to Pentrex' "Workin' On the Railroad", with lots of explanatory narrative, this viseo leaves something to be desired, although, being in Blue Ray, the picture quality is inherently better than Pentrex' DVD, as can be expected. The second disc of this two disc set is a little more understandable, maybe because I'd already watched the first disc, I don't know. This video did give a lot of free publicity to the Caravan Coffee shop in Belmont, NC near the intersection of South Main Street and (Avenue 2?) where the work was being performed. :>)

This video is a keeper however. I'll keep both it AND Pentrex' video.

Additional remarks by Rail Buff:
