The Durango and Silverton operates 45 miles of former Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge track in the San Juan mountains of southwestern Colorado. From Durango, at an elevation of 6500 feet, the railroad steadily climbs along the Animas River to Silverton, at 9300 feet. Originally built to tap the rich mining areas around Silverton, the line now hauls tourists year round.

This DVD contains footage from both 2011 and 2012. The first segment shows the winter operation to Cascade Canyon (roughly half the distance to Silverton) with K-28 class 2-8-2 #478. From sunny skies one day to a blizzard the next, you'll see a breathtaking portrait of steam in the winter.

We'll also climb aboard the Winter Photographers Train held in February of 2012. Locomotive #486 pulls a mixed train from Durango to Cascade with many runbys held en route, highlighted by 1886-built Flanger OF being used in snow clearing service.

You'll also see coverage of the August 2012 Railfest with the visiting “Eureka,” an authentic 1875 wood-burning ‘American' type locomotive. We'll climb aboard the Friday run to Cascade Canyon, and also see trackside views on Saturday and Sunday. Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose #5 and locomotives #478, #482, and #486 also make appearances.

Finally you'll see the regular operation to Silverton, including 4 trains a day during the busy summer months of 2011.

Filmed entirely in HD, this DVD features great steam action amidst spectacular mountain scenery.

This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music.

This is a standard definition DVD-R presented in 16:9 widescreen, and should be compatible with any DVD player.

Total running time is 102 minutes.

steam in the rockies vol.1 looks at operations on the durango & silverton narrow guage railroad in southwestern Colorado much of the footage is all shot in 2011 and 2012 the video first starts with the railroads Cascade Canyon trip with k-28 mikado 478 (theres also a latter segment with k-36 mikado 486 with a Flanger in winter snow for a photo shoot) the big part of the video i liked was the footage of the railroads annual railfest the event featured k-36's 486 and 482 and k-28 478 as well as the railroads notable visitors rio grande & southern galloping goose bus no.5 and Eureka no.4 than there's footage from 2011 showing the railroads busy months in the summer season while most of the videos i've reviewed from steam train videos have been mostly the ones on mainline steam there are some tourist railroads i do like this video is the only one of the steam in the rockies that looks at the d&s while the rest looks at the cumbres & toltec scenic railroad (which i have said i have liked the c&ts more than the d&s) overall this is a really good video of the d&s (i've seen many programs on this railroad this is probably the best one i've seen)

Additional remarks by chris collins:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
