In May of 2019, Union Pacific made history. Big Boy 4014, the largest steam locomotive on earth took to the main line under its own power for the first time in nearly 60 years!

The restoration was just in time for the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah, commemorating the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

Paired with UP 844, the only steam locomotive to never be taken out of active service on a major railroad, the 4014 made its first excursion run between Cheyenne, Wyoming and Ogden, Utah in what was billed as "The Great Race to Ogden."

7idea Productions takes you trackside for this historic event from Cheyenne to Ogden and return. Catch the 4014 climbing Sherman Hill, gliding across the Wyoming plains, and tackling the Wasatch grade.

In Ogden, Utah, Union Pacific's Spike 150 Celebration had the feeling of a rock concert as thousands of people came out to see the Big Boy for the first time.

We'll take you to Promontory for a reenactment of the driving of the golden spike that united a nation east to west. With the festivities over, Big Boy number 4014 and the 844 return home to Cheyenne.

This is your front row seat to the greatest railroading event in 60 years! This is Return of the Big Boy!

Return of the Big Boy 4014 in 2019 has become the talk of the 21st century. I was there on May 9 & 10 for the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah. Big Boy 4014 teamed up with never retired Union Pacific Northern 844 throughout the whole trip from Cheyenne to Ogden and return in a once of a lifetime that we may never see again. The video shows clips of 844 in the Feather River Canyon 2009 (Into the Feather River Canyon), and Challenger 3985 (The Shasta Route) which from 1981-2010 was the worlds largest operating locomotive. In 2013, Union Pacific re-acquired Big Boy 4014 from Los Angeles county fairgrounds since it was the best condition of the 8 surviving Big Boys. 6 years later in May 2019, the world experienced a memorable event something it would never happen again. And now, Big Boy 4014 has now claimed the honor as the worlds largest, heaviest and the most powerful operating steam locomotive displacing Challenger 3985, and Norfolk and Western class A #1218. May 8 was the day I left home to travel to Salt Lake City for the biggest event in my life, and I returned home on May 17 (9 days later). Greatest trip ever and hopefully Ed Dickens and his whole steam crew will have the Big Boy 4014 in operation for generations to come.

The footage on the Big Boy is fantastic. I bought the Blu-ray and the picture is crystal clear. I really enjoyed this DVD
I also bought the one by Trains Magazine and I honestly liked this DVD better than the one by Trains. You can watch it with or without narration and the narration is just the right amount!
