On August 1, 2015, Iowa Pacific Holdings assumed operations of the State of North Carolina Owned Piedmont & Northern Railroad.
During this period IPH continued to serve online freight customers but also introduced passenger excursions to the P&N (whose passenger service ended in 1951), most notably "The Train to Christmas Town".
IPH utilized some very unusual locomotives for a 13.04 mile railroad, including modified ex Amtrak F40PHRs, Norfolk Southern GP60 and MP15Es, F7As in Lehigh Valley colors and a CSX SD50-2.
On June 16, 2017, Progressive Rail Inc. gave notice to the Surface Transportation Board that they would assume operations for rail service operations of the Piedmont & Northern.
