The Last Decade Relive the Western Pacific's 1970-1980 period with film from seven different sources. Additional film material from pre-WW11 and the sixties combined with archive photos and historical details round out this presentation.. The modest success of the Pearlman years and the last months of the California Zephyr are covered with plenty of great run-bys. Freight action includes the great scenery of Feather River Canyon along with the Nevada Desert. The WP yards in Oakland , Stockton and Sacramento give a look at the variety of equipment used. The street running in Oakland with big freight trains pulled by solid sets of F-units should bring back some great memories. More action with F-units, Geeps and U-boats in the Altamont Pass provide some great views of freight cars lettered for many of the railroads made extinct by mergers. See some great vintage action at the now defunct Stockton Tower where the WP, SP and Santa Fe all converge. We cover locals, switchers and some of the WP subsidiary lines plus action at Haggin crossing in Sacramento. This presentation is rounded out with epic film of the Western Pacific's Bicentennial painted GP-40 on the point of long freight trains. Featuring: Stockton San Jose "Turn" Oakland Streets Desert Running The Canyon Cal Zephyr Early Diesels U-boats ALCOs NOTE The DVD version has an extra 14 minutes of new Sacramento Northern material.

I'm a fan of the WP, so most things are collected.

Additional remarks by NZ WP fan:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

To a degree, another true to style Charles Smiley movie.
The title: WP the Last Decade made me assume that the majority of the movie would be on the final years, but instead, the major amount is on the years leading up to the Last Decade. The History of the line is well presented, along with maps and the wide variety of power, along with scenes from other railroad companies. There are photo's and filmage of Steam engines, and there is a fair amount of narration on the few F7's that remained to the end.
Although there were 3 states that the WP was mainly in, much of the movie centers in California. Some interesting scenery is shown which includes some fishermen enjoying themselves.
The final 14 minutes are dedicated to the Sacramento Northern Railway, and is shot in black and white, which adds to the historical side of the movie. And the Electrics make a good appearance.
Over all, a fine presentation. Not my favorite movie by Charles Smiley, but not disappointed that I purchased this movie.
