Towers and Branchlines on DVD by Rail Innovations

Enjoy two very different programs on one DVD. From the bustle and non-stop action of Toronto Terminals, to the slower pace of local freights working 5 different Ontario branchlines, you're offered a fascinating look at two very different types of railroading.

All three Toronto interlocking towers are well documented, as are VIA, GO Transit, Amtrak and CN trains as they make their way through miles of interlocking. Not only is the operation of the interlocking plant explained, but you'll join track crews fighting the aftermath of a winter storm.

In stark contrast to the "Towers" program, "Branchlines" features five Southern Ontario branchlines in the late '90's. We are trackside, aboard the trains and even ride a plow extra on lines that are now either abandoned or transferred to shortline operators.

An excellent DVD with two very interesting programmes. Toronto Union: Trains and Tower is a fascinating look at what Union Station was like just over a decade ago. For anyone interesting in Toronto area railways, this DVD is very informative and entertaining. Aside from the behind-the-scenes tours of all three TTR Towers, there is a wide variety of trains from GO, VIA, CN, Amtrak and Ontario Northland. Branchlines in Transition is a very different programmes, looking at five different branchlines in Southern Ontario. Since it was filmed, some of the lines have changed company so this is a good record of what things were like. The ride with the snowplow train is a must-see!

Additional remarks by Thomas Blampied:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!

Large cities with large, urban train stations are complex. Toronto Ontario is no expection with it's Union Station. I've lost count at the number of times that I've travelled through this very station on GO Transit, VIA Rail, and Amtrak (Toronto to New York City). It is always fasinating to see the network of tracks and switches aqnd wonder at how they do it. Rail Innovations shows us the entire working of the area around Toronto's Union Station. Learn how it is all possible to run so many trains in a day, in various seasons as well, yes - in the snow and summer season. See working towers and learn how they operate. Local transit, Intercity, Cross country trains all feeding into one large station, with very few difficulties. You need to see it to fully understand it. Beyond this Metropolitan city of 2 million plus are many shortlines and branch lines in Southern Ontario. Although some are gone since the movie was made, some are surviving and doing well today. (I know a couple of the lines very well that have survived, and it's great to see them on video). Even a snow plow job on a line that will never again see the light of a locomotive. It's great railroading at it's finest. Urban and rural together all on one DVD. No matter what the railfan interest is, there is something to fascinate everyone on this DVD. My top rated movie by Rail Innovations, and in my top 12 of all my 160 + railroad movies/videos.
