Touted as Americas most talked-about train the California Zephyr took travelers from Chicago to Oakland/San Francisco in style. It was the flagship of the CB&Q, DRGW and Western Pacific and was known for the spectacular scenery of the Rockies as seen through its domes.

Climb aboard the California Zephyr and experience the magic of a unique train, and also meet the people who made the Zephyr special.

Enjoy a meal in the dining car as described in memories of a dining car steward, or have Zephyrettes share their daily experience with you. Find out what it was like to ride in a Vista-Dome as recalled by several passengers, or learn from the person who presided over the demise of the train and how difficult it was to terminate the California Zephyr.

Silver Thread Through the West is produced by Richard W. Luckin, an award winning documentary producer/director.

Some great stories of the famous Zephyr from people that actually rode it or worked on it. This is not a video of runbys and such, but of a look at the people associated with it. It's a fascinating story, and this video is very nicely polished. It's also one that may not bore your non-railfan friends :)

Aired in 1999, this video chronicles what railroading in the hearland as well as the rockies and the feather river canyon was like before Airplanes Automobiles and Amtrak. The music was excellent in this, as well as the vintage films of the original zephyr fom the CB&Q Rio Grande and WP.

Additional remarks by Steamboy:
Narration: Just enough.
Narration CAN be turned off in special features.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Excellent Value!
Recommend to others? Yes.

I have another pre-Amtrak California Zephyr video, which runs from Chicago to Oakland. This video, however, shows just anything you want to see, including the Amtrak California Zephyr.

I thought that the video would show another angle of the California Zephyr. I didn't realize that it was an educational video.

There were various videos of trains, some going back to the past, some present, but none of a straight run from Chicago to Oakland, or vice versa.

I was a little disappointed in the video.

Additional remarks by william5419:
Narration: A little bit too much.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.
