Santa Fe's "final run" of steam power over Cajon Pass took place on February 6, 1955 when locomotive No. 3759 was brought out of storage at the request of the Railway Club of Southern California for a special excursion dubbed "Farewell to Steam." This historic event was captured on film by noted railfan photographer J. Allen Hawkins, and his colorful images vividly convey the excitement and the drama of that final day in the life of the Santa Fe steam era.

The powerful Northern-type locomotive pulled its special train out of Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal for the climb over Cajon Pass to Barstow, returning to Los Angeles later that same day. Along the way it stopped at favorite railfan spots for photography run-bys, giving you the opportunity to experience the excursion from trackside, inside the cab of the locomotive, even from the roofs of the cab and the tender. Clear skies and magnificent Cajon scenery added their special touches to the great steam action you'll see here. It's a fascinating trip back in time, bringing back to life the glory days of Santa Fe steam!

Some well done historical film footage nicely translated to a modern DVD format-gotta love technology. It is truly amazing the effort Santa Fe Railway went to at the request of a railway club-and here it is documented for future generations to see.The narration that goes with the footage makes for an enjoyable and unboring presentation. Several different camera angles, locations and traversing Cajon Pass make for a good video that is watchable again and again.

I recall the video but I have sounds of that engine running on that trip on a record. It had a neat screaming whistle and it sounded very powerful In one sequence it ran at 85mph

Additional remarks by rrvideojunkie:
Narration: Could have used more.

This DVD was everything I expected and more. For the period in time when this was photographed the quality is very good. The views of 3759 and train should interest modelers and rail fans alike.

Additional remarks by The Old Rail.:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!

A great video that seamlessly combines movies from a variety of sources shot from a variety of viewpoints documenting this historic last run of ATSF 3759 over Cajon Pass. It also provides an historic window on 1950's Los Angeles and points east over Cajon Pass. If you are as big a fan of Santa Fe steam as I am, then this video is certainly recommended.
