This is one of the best super-long distance steam excursion videos ever made! I believe this is THE only program that covers ALL days of 3751 from Los Angeles to Chicago and back pulling the Employee's Appreciation Special; other programs that feature this trip only show part of the the trip. For example, Greg Scholl Video Productions has footage of this event but only from LA to Chicago one-way. This is a very-informative program where all segments of the trip from LA to Chicago are detailed in mileage as well as Santa Fe Subdivisions the locomotive is on. This program is a MUST-HAVE for anybody who likes steam locomotives or the Santa Fe in general, especially 3751!

Additional remarks by Nikhil Murthy:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Definitely!
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!

After undergoing a thorough restoration, Santa Fe's Northern #3751 was immediately selected to pull the railroad's employee recognition special in 1992. Video Rails was on hand all the way from Los Angeles to Chicago and back. The trip lasted 24 days and Video Rails covered every bit of the action. The program's start shows 3751 departing for Hobart Yard in Los Angeles. After that, the camera crew tries hard to keep up with the fast-paced special. Its efforts are rewarded with an hour and a half of steam power. Two and sometimes three new GE diesels are on hand both for publicity and for lending assistance to 3751. The first sixty minutes document 3751's journey to Chicago, and the last thirty minutes show her journey back to Los Angeles. Freight action is sporadically shown, as the program focuses on 3751. Surprisingly, no cab footage is shown. In previous steam excursion programs, Video Rails documented cab footage. However, no such provision is made, as the program consists mostly of runbys and pacing shots. But overall this DVD proves to be very enjoyable. I recommend it very much; it would make a nice addition to any railfan's collection.

Steam power was an amazing thing in it's day. Big, heavy machines, high horsepower, and strong. Nothing beats the sight of a steamer puffing down the tracks, smoke flying, and sounds a banging. Santa Fe 3751 is a big 4-8-4 Northern, that was designed to work hard, pulling heavy loads. But we never see that in this video. What we see is a steam engine pulling a dozen or so cars, with the assistance of not one, but up to 3 high horsepower diesels. I realize that the steam train can not service the cars, but more than one diesel engine of that amount of power? The video itself is good. The scenery and the photography along the way is also good. Interesting to see the men working with the 3751. And to see the crowds that turned out to see the big machine. To watch this magnificent machine working in this video would be like going out to see diesels working mainline service, pulling 6 or 7 car loads.
For anyone who enjoys excursion steam, You will like this video. For anyone who likes seeing engines working hard... maybe You will want to look else where. I am not disappointed with the video itself, but I had hoped to see the engine put to work and show it's power. That does not happen.
