Saluda, the Legendary Grade.

Here's one of the most famous mountain climbs in railroad history. The average grade on Saluda is 4.7% with a 5.1% maximum. Yet, for 120 years, trains conquered the "Mountain of Challenge". In the days of the Southern Railway, it wasn't unusual to "triple" a train to get up the grade. See Saluda as it is now and learn the history of the grade.

These two shows take you to Saluda grade in Western North Carolina. Delay in Block Productions tells the story of this grade through interviews, video and photos. And Pentrex has digitized and enhanced a 1984 Southern Railway / Norfolk Southern training film that shows everything needed to take a 100-car coal train down the mountain. You'll be in the cab!

1 hour 17 minutes. Color, chapter markers, narration, On-Screen Graphics.
Presented in Standard Definition, Widescreen. Available in High Definition Blu-ray.

It is a historical record of what was together with a wide range of experiences from the folks who has a connection with this line. Also historical film of the engineer setting / checking that all was good to descend the grade.

Additional remarks by The Dodger:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Poor.
DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.
