The New River Valley was chosen by early railroad surveyors in Virginia to reach the West and to tap the rich coalfields of West Virginia.
Several railroads that took this route were consolidated in the early 1880's to complete the coal hauling titan known as the Norfolk and Western Railway.
The Virginian Railway (merged into N&W in 1959) also chose to follow the New River to reach West Virginia. The VGN line was located on the opposite bank. In 1985 the a portion of the former Virginian line was relocated and combined with the N&W between Kellysville, WV and Narrows, VA.
This program follows the former Norfolk and Western mainline between Oakvale, WV and Narrows, VA. Manifest and coal trains are represented, as well as double stack trains. The three year "Heartland Corridor Project", that expanded clearances, was completed only a few days earlier, allowing stack trains along this route. Also included is the awesome LORAM rail grinding train!
The program is arranged in geographical order starting at Oakvale, WV. Other locations include Willowton, WV, Glen Lyn, VA and Narrows, VA.
Also included is Bonus Material; Watch a mine run departing the ex Interstate Railroad yard at Andover, VA, with some hi-tech equipment.
No narration. Subtitles provide train information (Location, Time, Date, Train Numbers etc). Stereo Sound.
