Until 1949, Newfoundland was a separate colony of Great Britain. In that year, it became a Canadian Province. As early as 1847, there were stirrings in St. Johns as to building a railroad, 547 miles westward across the island to Port aux Basque. By the 1880's, the Newfoundland Railway was in place, built to 42 inch narrow gauge. Standard gauge railcars came in interchange from North Sydney, NS, via ferry, to Port aux Basque. Narrow gauge trucks were exchanged to 42" gauge trucks. In 1969, the island became a Province of Canada and the Canadian National took over operations, under their subsidiary, Terra Transport. Mr. John Lewis traveled to the island to recoord on tape the operations of the line. A&R is proud to take you back to the final years of this fascinating piece of railroading history. 90 minutes - All color - Maps - Narration Copyright 2013 A&R Systems, Inc.

Once a part of the vast Canadian National Railway system....... gone forever from the map. Canadian history, seen close up. This video preserves the history of this great territory, an island railway that truly helped form a nation with a railroad.... coast to coast.
The video is a touch short of great quality, but we have to remember the time it was filmed in where technology is not what it is today. The producer travels the length of the island and we are treated to some very interesting scenes of this narrow gauge system. Beginning on the "main land", a boat ride across to the island of Newfoundland, and then yard switching before the trip across the island and back. Well done over all, but may not be to everyone's liking.
I have to give this video high ratings hughly because of the historical value, and therefore recommend it to all railfans.
