Comic genius Buster Keaton achieved an artistic milestone with the 1927 silent adventure The General. Based on a true story, this Civil War Tale not only starred Keaton, but was written and co-directed by him as well.

Keaton, as confederate railroad engineer John Gray, attempts to thwart the theft of his beloved locomotive, "The General," by Union spies. He springs into action when he realizes the "other" love of his life, girlfriend Annabelle Lee, is taken captive. His adventure turns from drama to hilarity in a memorable and poignant fashion. Buster Keaton displays the deadpan countenance and brilliant comic timing that made him one of America's most beloved comedians and an icon of his era.

One of Keaton's favorite films, The General is known for its masterfully composed action sequences and brilliant recreation, of the Antebellum South. It is recognized by critics and movie afficionados as one of the greatest silent comedies of all time.

Amazing... a 1927 silent movie in crystal clear and sharp Bluray. I wonder what Buster would have thought of all this?

Anyway, I was skeptical that a bluray conversion would work for this classic, but it does. Everything is quite sharp. And of course the movie itself is a classic and more train action than you'll see anywhere maybe with the exception of "The Train" with Burt Lancaster.

The extras were a little weak. The tour of the General was very "pedestrian" and the tour guide kind of went in and out of civil war related history and the General, so one minute he'd be talking about how the sander works, the next he's off on Civil War history instead of the General.

The tour of the filming locations was incredibly short (just 3 or 4 scenes in 5 minutes) and really not all that well done.

But the highlight of the extras was "The Buster Express". A series of train related clips from Keaton's career. Short but sweet.

If you haven't watched this movie because you think it's so old, and there's no sound, and it's going to be dull, you'd be making a big mistake!
