The MKT was chartered in 1868, as the southern division of the Union Pacific, to connect Kansas with Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. Eventually, it reached from Kansas to Denison, TX, its headquarters, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, Galveston and San Antonio. Through trackage rights agreements, it reached St. Ouis and Omaha, NE. In 1980, it acquired trackage rights of bankrupt Rock Island in Oklahoma, which they operated as the Oklahoma-Kansas-Texas. Jim Terrell filmed many of the Katy's lines in TX, OK and KS.Included are visits to the Denison car shops, their former tie plant and the UP excursion engine 8444 in OK. After the road was merged by UP into the MOPAC, there was mixing of power. Eventually, both were absorbed into the UP. Running time is 2 hours, full color, sound in camera, narration and maps.

I was amazed at the wealth of detailed Katy film contained in this video. There is a good survey of most of the Katy system and great coverage of the varied motive power in the John Deere era. This video would be great for anyone who enjoys Texas railroading since you see plenty of other roads. A wonderful bonus is the many short lines that appear including Galveston Wharves, Texas City Terminal, Kansas City Terminal and even a 2 foot gauge railroad tie/telephone pole manufacturing plant. Ocasionally the camera is a little jerky, but the image is still clear and the color and detail are good. The cinematography is very good as well and includes good framing ofthe subject with nice transitions and plenty of scenery for good context. The sound quality is good with no distortion, but the volume of the narration fluctuates a little. This is a must have for any Katy railfan and would appeal to anyone with an interest in fallen flag railroads of Texas.

Additional remarks by Matthew C. Halbert:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Yes.
Image quality: Good.

Great DVD thoroughly entertaining and a "must watch" again and again DVD

I can't get enough of those "fallen flag" railroads - they are sorely

missed by true rail fans.Regards Gordon Atkins.

This is must for all Katy fans. The productions covers about 20 years with most shots during the tomato bug paint era. The MKT, despite the fresh paint schemem was held together by determination and baling wire in those days. The sound and video is from original Super 8mm. The video has been computer restored and freshened up for most pleasant experience. Also included are excellent shots from the portions of the bankrupt Rock Island that the MKT acquired called the OKT. At the end is a visit by the UP 844. The narration and video editing create a cohesive fine flowing production.

Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value:: Fair.
