There are hundreds of shortline railroads across North America. The majority are spin-offs from trackage no longer wanted by Class One’s and other bigger companies. However, only a few retain a name & original track miles since their birth. Join us as we follow and document one such operation: the Lancaster & Chester railroad, “the Springmaid line.”

If there was an award for the best railroad video made in a year..... this would win for 2017. This is the best shortline video I have seen and purchased. There is plenty of action with the older type engines, not making great speed, but working hard. Interchanging with NS so we get to see the NS adding to it. Included is a map of the region covered. Narration is very well done and informative. The region is quite scenic and also well presented.
Top marks for a great video.

Additional remarks by rrvideoman:

Just watched the Lancaster & Chester Blu ray program and what an interesting program it is. Cool motive power, such as a SD40T-2 without dynamics, a C40-8 power slug, an ex Southern High Nose GP38 with two Low Nose GP38's and an ex. CN GP40LW. Line features a 4.8 percent ruling grade, plus many on line Industries. Lots of steep grades with jointed rail lines through narrow wooded areas . Locomotives are painted in an attractive light blue scheme with white lettering, except the ex. CN unit. If you want great shoreline action, this program is for you. NS power also is covered at interchange points.

Video and Sound Quality - 5 Stars

Content - 3 Stars
Narration - 4 Stars

I'm reviewing the Blu-ray version. The video quality is top notch. The scenery, tortured trackage, and grades were very cool. I particularly liked a shot showing an oncoming train through the heatwaves radiating off the tracks. The sound level was superb. I have a hearing deficit and could easily hear with the TV volume at 18, max being 99. Very impressed with Broken Knuckle! A big distraction is the almost continual horn blasts and bell clanging. Apparently the videographer didn't stray too far from the crossings. No Emory Goulash adventure shots here! I like hearing horns and bells but to this extent over a 2 hour period was a major annoyance- maybe I'm nitpicking? The content was lacking. Sparse footage of interchanging action. Considering the only 29 miles of trackage with another 30 miles of leased, this 2 hour production was repetitive. Why no footage of the engine house or L&N's switchers. Broken Knuckle aerial shots are on YouTube, would have been nice were included in this video. Engine info would have been nice. Perhaps a banner with that info was displayed across the bottom screen- easy editing. The narrator mentioned basic info on a few engines- just a few quick blurbs, otherwise nicely done. L&N's engine roster is available on the internet. All things considered, guess I was expecting something more comprehensive for a 2 hour production of a small line. I would still recommend!

Narration: Could have used more.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
