Hot Spots 25 Marion Ohio BLURAY

Also available in DVD.

Marion, Ohio is the crossing of three main lines at grade. CSX on the east-west former NYC Big 4/Erie Lackawanna line, crossed by the north-south former Pennsy, no NS Sandusky line, and the former C&O, now CSX Columbus to Toledo line. Marion Union Depot is at the junction of the three lines, and is still a great place to watch trains.

Hot Spots are often very good locations for train watching, and Marion Ohio fits that category. No arguments there. However, in this video, I feel that while there is plenty of train action, I questioned if the producers could have done better. Narration needs a lot of work. There is very little narration, and this video needs some as it lacks screen graphics also. It is your basic "trains rolling by type video with no information video". Because it is directly at diamonds, the trains are also slow moving. Location of where the video is shot from changes little. While I enjoyed the video, I was disappointed for a Highball production, hoping to see and/or learn more of the Marion rail action. 3 stars are generous.

Additional remarks by rrvideoman:
Narration: Could have used more.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

This DVD shows the parade of trains at or near the crossings around Marion tower. This is a busy and well-known railfan location so there is plenty to see and there are some good shots. But I ended up rather disappointed and confused. The camerawork is not quite as slick as in other recent Highball DVDs. More importantly with effectively no narration and no graphics, there is nothing to enable the various trains to be identified, which to me is an important part of the picture. The constant switching between locations added to the difficulty of identifying even the direction of trains, despite watching with the aid of a rail atlas. Having recently enjoyed Green Frog’s excellent DVD on Marion shot almost 20 years earlier I was hoping for something better.

Additional remarks by RPS:
Narration: There was no narration.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: A little rough around the edges.
DVD Value:: Fair.

Picture quality is excellent, but I wish there was more narration and different shooting locations near the topic town.
