For over 40 years, respected railroad photographer Anthony DeRosa railfanned the Great Northern Railway system, filming its operations from Seattle to Lake Superior and capturing the essence of a once-powerful and always popular railway. In 1994, Video Rails compiled Mr. DeRosa"s collection into a 3-volume video set that was highly prized for its rare images and historical significance. Now you can experience the Great Northern Railway with all the improved visual clarity and crispness that DVD viewing provides. This Combo DVD features:

Volume 1: Iron Ore Operations
Witness the iron ore operations of the Great Northern from the mines and ore docks at Kelly Lake to Allouez, St. Paul, and Superior. Includes great views of GN"s N-3 class 2-8-8-0s in action. (45 minutes)

Volume 2: Diesel & Electric Power
View the diesel locomotives that were common to everyday use across the vast Great Northern system, as well as Northern Pacific and SP&S diesel power. GN"s mighty electrics are featured as well. (45 minutes)

Volume 3: Steam Power
See the Great Northern"s widely varied fleet of steam power in action, from the smallest 0-6-0s to the giant 2-8-8-2s. A special highlight is a pacing sequence with a huge R-2 class 2-8-8-2. These and other unique views bring you the Great Northern Railway as few have seen it! (45 minutes)

My Great Uncle Clifford worked for the GN and for a time lived across the street from the Butte roundhouse. Short version.., I love trains and the Great Northern. Awesome shots from someone who probably carried his camera in a lunch bucket. Certainly a more accurate record and nearly as exciting as my memories of looking out a bedroom window on Shields St.

Thank you for making it available.

Some great footage of steam in it's prime on the Great Northern. Was happy to see the 2-6-8-0's; would have liked to see some 4-8-0 footage. The yard and roundhouse scenes were great, too. Recommended!

What a fantastic collection of vintage films of the Grean Northern. Three films on one DVD makes this a great value.
The first video, on Iron Ore operations, is quite interesting. There's footage of the mining equipment as well as the locomotives that hauled the raw material to its destination. Steam power, both large and small, are seen, as well as their Geep replacements. The second film, the Diesels and Electrics of the GN is incredibly interesting. Here, you see early F units, E units, Alcos, as well as Gas-Electrics. There's also lots of passenger trains, both heavyweight and streamliners. There's a great section on the boxcab electrics operated by the GN, which were similar to the Milwaukee Road. There's also a glimpse of the largest electric locomotive ever built, a beautiful double-ended monster built by GE. In addition to the trains, there's also a very interesting look at the trucks, buses and automobiles operated by the GN. Anthony DeRosa also filmed President Truman on his Presidential Train while he greeted people from the observation end of his business car.
The third film, on the steam power of the GN, features everything from the smallest 0-6-0's to the articulated Challenger and R class locomotives. Lots of great scenes abound, as well as pacing and high-speed chases. All in all, a great video for those who are interested in the GN!
