From Basel, in the north of Switzerland, to Chiasso on the Italian border, we capture the multitude of traffic that uses this alpine route daily. The sheer variety of the rail traffic is unrivaled, freight trains with 2 or 3 locomotives to Trans-European trains, all twisting and spiraling their way over this high pass.

From Luzern the railway climbs 2,350 feet in 55 miles to Goschenen where the trains enter the 9.5 mile long Gotthard Tunnel. Emerging from the southern portal of the tunnel, the trains continue their relentless journey to the south through the Ticino region with stops at Bellinzona and Lugano before reaching the Italian border. For an hour we study this fascinating railway which challenged the minds of its builders and explore the mighty Alpine Barrier.

Originally a British TV program titled "Great Railways of Switzerland", this video is a trip along the Gotthard line of Switzerland, which connects to other countries of Europe. As for content, there is a lot of fast paced electric action, views of stations and yards and some historical equipment as well. Trains from Switzerland, Germany and Italy are seen speeding through the countryside. In addition to mainline electrified railroading, we see some interesting Diesel Passenger MUs and rack railways. Some equipment seen is difficult to find on any video, especially the vintage TEE Railcars which, according to the video, were about to be retired and placed into historical service. However, as with all Arts Magic DVDs, there is one issue that keeps recurring: Poor image quality. The image quality on this program leaves a lot to be desired. I understand that Arts Magic might not have a huge budget, but I would have gladly paid a bit more to have better processed films, especially since I'm interested in electric railroading, and the action and subject matter is well done on this program. Pixelated images on a professionally produced program doesn't make much sense and it really detracts from the overall program.
As for content, it's about a 5, especially if you are into the subject matter. But image quality is a 1 or 2. Arts Magic has brought some interesting programs to the American market, but doesn't digitally enhance them, which I hope will be corrected in the future!

Additional remarks by Jeffrey Ornstein:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Poor.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.
