Excellent video to watch very informative and very good scenic, plus an excellent picture quality and knowledgable
person narrating. Added 2009-10-21 09:48:10 by sp4460
I enjoyed it. The host was a little over excited, but not as bad as many of the history channel characters. Great behind the scenes action. I especially enjoyed the segments on the UP Steam program, and the Ringling Bros. train. Its really amazing how much work goes on behind the scenes of running the trains. I read the reviews of this video, and almost did not purchase it, but curiosity got me.
Having viewed it, my 1st impression was that Matt Brown, host, is "a jerk". He is loud, and appears to be "overly ramy" to present the intended message of the video. Matt Brown is not what video narrators are normally like. He is a "turn off" at first, but please read on. The fast tracking also did not impress me, as it 1st appeared to take away from the video and was distracting. If this was the 1st train video I purchased... It could have been my last.
However, upon really watching it through, I noted 2 major things. #1... There are messages in this video, and when we see it, it is excellent. Very informative, in a way that other train videos miss. There is a great deal of information explained that we rarely ever see. I liked that very much. And there was some historical information that many of us don't know. #2... I have 2 boys under age 12. Neither are huge train fans. I had the video on before school, and I had to chase the boys out the door to go to school. They love it. When they came home, they wanted to continue watching the video, and they sat still for a long time, actually quiet. I am thrilled to see the reaction of younger children. It would be excellent for the schools to have also for educational purposes.
My 1st reaction: Maybe a 4 out of 10, but having really looked at it..... a 9+ out of 10, and "a must have" for all train lovers. Looking past what we don't like, this video is excellent, and when the rest of the series comes available, I will purchase it all. Added 2009-10-12 18:36:20 by samtheman
Yeah I think you hit the nail right on the head. It's impossible to ignore the fact that the videography is top rate and they've gotten unprecedented access to places that few have seen. I'm still hoping they find someone else to host if they do another season, but I'll take the "bad" to get to the good. Added 2009-09-07 13:17:32 by dirtyharry
I really got a few nights enjoyment from the dvds. If this were a series I would purchase them all. Added 2009-07-14 17:17:35 by samtheman
This is an *edit* to my previous review again. We just came back from the NMRA show in Hartford, CT where Matt was actually there on Friday and Saturday. While I was too busy manning the booth, I never did meet him, but lots of people did, and when I asked what they thought of the show and him, everyone was very enthusiastic about both. There was only one other that had the same opinion I had that he was a little too much to handle. But they all said he's a real down to earth railfan like all of us and is genuinely excited about doing the hosting...and a nice guy. So as I'd still prefer it toned down, and I'd definitely like the jump cuts to be ... well... cut out, I'll have to change my opinion that he's just an excitable foamer and that's "ok". This is an exceptional new series on the History Channel. It's geared mostly for non-foamers, but I think the railfan will definitely enjoy it. The history channel got some incredible access to the railroads. The scenery and train shots are unlike any you've seen. Each episode on the DVD covers a different subject/route (I think there are 6 episodes). This is basically a "must have" if you don't have access to the History Channel programming. Even if you do it would be handy to be able to play it at any time. There are a couple of BIG BAD CLOUDS looming on all this greatness. The biggest and most frustrating is the host. He is as loud and obnoxious as you'll EVER see anywhere. When he's in scenes with the train crews, you can clearly read the body language of the crews when he continually spews out these ridiculous remarks while screaming them at the top of his lungs while his arms are flailing around like a baboon. Seriously, it's bad! The only salvation is that he's not doing it throughout the whole show. The other negative is the jump and quick cuts they use. The quick 1 second scene cuts they make. Borderline nausea material. When they're filming the host, the camera is down on the ground pointing up right at the host while he's staring into the camera screaming something ridiculous and flailing his arms around. I've got my fingers crossed for season 2 that they either get rid of the host or at least have him tone it down, and go easy on or preferably get rid of the quick cuts. It's too great a show. |
