In volume 1, we look at the Erie and Lackawanna railroads between the mid 1940s and the late 1950s in both steam and diesel.

We’ll then tour the Erie-Lackawanna from the waterfront at Hoboken and progress along the route of the Lackawanna west to the Paulinskill Viaduct in Hainesburg during the 1960s

The visual material is excellent but one of the narrators has a rough, unpleasant voice and very poor diction. Unfortunately, there is no narration shut-off so you must mute the TV and lose the train sounds too.

Additional remarks by Chris Miller:
Narration: Way too much!
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Seemed a little high, but not too bad.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

I know exactly what you mean. I have a few videos with this narrator and it is not exactly the voice of a Harvard Law School Professor

The narrator (Michael Bednar) has suffered two strokes over the past 11 years. His speech was affected. He does the best he can and is lucky to be alive.

Poor diction. Mike Bednar has a flare for the English language that is most excellent. As a Native of Ohio I can not tolerate my Railfanning colleagues portrayal of insensitivity toward Mr Bednar. I must assume the criticism is born out of being an English major that graduated from some school like Oberlin. I find Mr Bednar refreshing and a Joy to List to speak. May Mr Bednar continue for many years to come.
