Join Left Coast Rail Videos for a two part program as we take you on board and trackside with the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
In part one, we take a spectacular train ride on the Durango and Silverton to Silverton. Using the newest video technology; we use two HD 4K camcorders mounted on 3-axis gimbal stabilizers. You'll enjoy smooth, rock steady video unlike anything you've seen before.
Along the 45 mile route, you'll see the magnificent steam engine and the train surrounded by beautiful scenery along the famous Highline and the raging river waters in the Animas River Canyon with peak snow melt. It is easy to see why this is one of the top tourist railroads in the US. Part two takes you trackside, as we catch several of the D&S engines working hard to and from Silverton. I have several other Blue Ray discs on the D&S. All excellent though I prefer some to others. This one on the D&S ranks at the top, One word description on content: Fantastic. One word description on camera locations/angles; Imaginative. I saw things I had never seen before.
This is a two disc set. The first disc was taken from aboard the train, Durango to Silverton. Camera stability was excellent. Very steady even when the car in which it was located was bobbing and weaving because of the track bed. Shots of the High Line were as good or better than any I've seen. There had been a large snow melt so the Animas River was full of white water rapids. Very scenic.
Second disc, was taken from track side and included tour of downtown Silverton; turning of train by use of the wye (I thought they just made a loop through town. Not so. With a loop I had wondered why they needed a wye); One train was actually paced near Hermosa. Never saw pacing before on the D&S.
During a heat wave the track "kinked" stranding two trains and the "rescue" of the passengers with a third train powered by a diesel was shown. Passengers walking on the track ballast between trains in the middle of nowhere. Interesting.
The roadbed was shown in places to be in very poor shape. Shots of the train showed the locomotive and cars "rocking and rolling", to quote a phase from the video.
In sum, an excellent product and if you like the D&S, one you won't want to be without. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
Now, if Left Coast would just give the same treatment to the C&TS? - - - - - Hope springs eternal.

In above review I asked, tongue in cheek, that Left Coast give the same treatment to the C&TS.
This morning (12/13)when I looked at TVD's web site, lo and behold, I found my wish granted! I ordered the Blue Ray immediately.
Isn't life great? :>)
