Recently discovered professional 16mm color film provides viewers with brand new images of one of America's most famous streamlined, steam locomotive hauled trains. Amtrak's current Coast Starlight is also included in the program.

I was surprised by the relatively poor image quality and production of this video. The addition of Michael Gross as narrator makes this just another mediocre treatment of the Southern Pacific Daylight. Better programs can be had from the likes of Pentrex and Charles Smiley Presents, I would not recommend this one.

Additional remarks by George Fotopaulos:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Poor.
DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

I found this video to be enjoyable, if rather rough in quality. Michael Gross is an excellent narrator who clearly shows enthusiasm for the subject matter. However I must agree with Mr. Fotopaulos in that there are superior 'Daylight' videos on the market.

Additional remarks by John Turner:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: A little rough around the edges.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Yes.

I just read the 1 star review and I couldn't disagree more! I thought this was a wonderful production. I first saw it on TV on PBS and searched it out so I could own it myself. Using Michael Gross as the host just made this more of a polished production. Sure, if you just want to see runby after runby, this would not be the DVD you would want. But if you want the history of Daylight, and hear from people that rode the train and worked on the train, I would highly recommend it. I thought the image quality was excellent. Strange!

Additional remarks by Jason:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? Definitely.

There are better Daylight videos out there, especially offerings from producers such as Pentrex and Greg Scholl. I would only recommend this video to somebody who is a 'completist'.

Additional remarks by Timothy Schoenauer:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Seemed a little high, but not too bad.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

It just goes to show you how varied rail fans are and what they like and don't like. I loved this one. I would say it's easily in my top 10. This is not just about watching Daylight trains over and over. It's about the history and the people that rode and worked on the railroad.

I just can't imagine giving this 1 star. There is a LOT of crud out there. This is polished, high quality and super informative. I highly recommend it.

Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Good Value
