Conrail SD80MACs on the Boston Line on DVD by Broken Knuckle

EMD's unique AC-Traction locomotive that fell in an unusual position between the more common SD70MAC's and SD90MAC's. Only 30 of them were built and all became the property of Conrail. The 5000 horsepower brutes could be found across the Conrail system, they were most at home on the many freights on the Boston line. Fans from across the nation visited the Boston Line just to see them! Upon the acquisition of Conrail by CSX in 1999, the MAC's started to disappear as they were relocated to the line's coal territory. BKVP is proud to bring you this program covering the "Big MAC's" in eastern New York, the Berkshires, Palmer, Charlton, Spencer and more!

I'll be up front with you...The EMD SD80MAC is my favorite modern diesel locomotive. And this video from Broken Knuckle does a great job of presenting the title subject. Overall the photographic quality is good, narration is minimal and to the point, including some operating procedures that are unique to the SD80MAC. Technical specifications of the SD80MAC are presented by the narrator in a couple scenes. Conrail kept the SD80MACs on the former Boston and Albany line because they were perfect for the terrain, and economical too. Scenes from many locations provide a great overview of these 5000 HP behemoths in operation. Symbols for most of the trains are displayed on screen along with the milepost location of the scenes. All 30 of the SD80MACs are seen in this video (Conrail was the only buyer of the SD80MAC). It is also interesting to note that, for the benefit of the many railfans that will buy this video, in a majority of the scenes, the entire train is shown. I have only one complaint about the photography on this video: the use of a polarization filter to eliminate reflections on the cab windshield would eliminate one minor distraction in many scenes. One thing that some buyers of this video will complain about is the lighting – many scenes have shadows from trees on the side of the trains. But what you see is what you get. This is mountain railroading in a forested area. If you were they in person, that is what you would see. This DVD is a DVD+R, so before you buy, please verify that your DVD player is compatible with DVD+R. Most DVD players are compatible, but not all.
