Cajon Pass and Tehachapi Loop - these two Southern California railroading landmarks draw railfans from around the world seeking to experience the engineering ingenuity, spectacular scenery, and steady parade of trains that make these locations so appealing.

Never was that more true than in 1986 when this program was originally filmed. At that time most trains still had cabooses, Southern Pacific oil cans (the "Tank Train") still ran over Tehachapi, and many Santa Fe and Southern Pacific locomotives sported the short-lived red and yellow "Kodachrome" merger paint scheme. You could still see pure sets of blue and yellow Santa Fe power, including EMD SD45s, F45s, and FP45s and GE U36Cs and C30-7s. Southern Pacific also ran pure sets of its locomotives, including SD45s and "tunnel motors," and Amtrak ran the Southwest Chief and the Desert Wind over Cajon with F40PH locomotives. The Santa Fe dispatcher"s office was still located in the San Bernardino depot, and the Mojave depot was still in use.

These are the sights of the past but you can experience them and more in this incredible show. Ride a Union Pacific helper pushing a 12,000-ton coal train over Cajon. Visit the Santa Fe dispatcher"s office in the San Bernardino depot and the hump yard and locomotive servicing facilities in Barstow. Thrill to cab rides on Cajon and Tehachapi. It"s all here for you to savor again!

Very good video, taken years ago, the quality of the transfer to DVD is perfect. I think Pentrex is the best around and this DVD just adds to that. All those older engines is one of the things I like best about this video.

Pentrex shot this production in '86 covering the entirety of both Cajon and Tehachapi Passes. This is quite an interesting production covering plenty of ATSF and SP action, with some UP thrown in. Not to mention an amazing assortment of older power we don't see too often on freight trains today.

Tehachapi probably has to be the highlight of this production; I'm particularly amazed with the Loop, and watching trains snake around it, to pass over themselves still exiting the tunnel below! The updated footage gives a nice comparison to what operations are like today; wish the railroads today still used old power; I prefer them more. :)

..Have driven by 'passes-loops' numerous times and it was hard to take "my eyes off the road" to watch the trains climb, twist, how many engines pulling, length of unit, etc.
With Pentrex, I now know the routes, the loops, the tunnels, the mainlines, the helpers upgrade and down!!
In the safety of my home, with my "eyes on the screen",
not on the highway.. Safety first!! Thanks Pentrex..

This video has a little of everything all rolled into one video including cab views from all directions. A Must Have video. I worked in the neighborhood of the loop for over 30 years and have always wanted to ride along over and through the loop. This is the closest I will every get.

This dvd is a must have for lovers of west coast heavy duty railroading in the eighties and early nineties style of action, sound quality is excellent and picture quality is very good for video of this era. Put this one on your list and a dvd you will watch time and time again if you like cajon/tehachapi action.

Cajon & Tehachapi are fascinating places that this video lets you see from many different aspects & angles. I thought that it covered the subject rather well & would recommend the video. It would have better if more footage would have been included from the 2004 portion.

The 'good ol' days.' In 1986, I was 12, needless to say, this brings back tearful memories of my youth. I grew up living near the Santa Fe Pasadena Sub all throughout the 1980s, and often I ask myself "how many of these trains on this video" did I see pass through my neighborhood?
Classic SD40s power, freight cars without graffiti, locomotives without ditch lights, locomotives that didn't sound the bell automatically with the horn blowing, "true" railroad crossing bells (non-electronic), trains with 8-10 locomotives up front, manned helpers, real semaphore signals that illuminated when a train was coming (or went), street grade-crossings made out of wood (instead of rubber or concrete like today), cabooses, all things GONE today. Needless to say, this video takes me back to the best days of my train-watching youth, a must have.
