Best of the Midwest Vol 1

To railroaders, the Midwest means nonstop action with plenty of variety. Pentrex takes you to Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota to sample the finest in Midwestern railroading.

The Class 1 railroads provide heavy traffic and high-speed excitement. Among these are Kansas City Southern, Union Pacific, Illinois Central, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Motive power ranges from Illinois Central GP10s to the latest EMD and General Electric AC locomotives on Union Pacific. There's even a rare EMD BL20-2.

Regional railroads are becoming increasingly important in the Midwest. You'll see the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern with its intriguing mix of power and will catch one of its passenger specials. Shortlines provide a vital link between shippers and trunk lines. We visit the Nebraska Northeastern, Sisseton Milbank, Dakota & Iowa, Nobles Rock, and the Ellis & Eastern. Each has its own personality and interesting locomotive roster. From shortlines to the high iron, a rich and colorful mosaic of railroading is yours to enjoy in The Best of the Midwest Volume One!

Best of the Midwest Vol 2

Pentrex takes you to South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin for more of the best in Midwestern railroading!

We visit several shortlines including the Minnesota Central, Dakota Southern, and Nebkota. Pentrex captured Nebkota's beautiful A-B-A set of F-units just days before it was sold to Canadian Pacific for use on executive trains.

Class I railroads create an abundance of action in the Midwest. Union Pacific is one of the busiest on its ex-Chicago & North Western mainline through Iowa. Burlington Northern Santa Fe is not far behind on its transcontinental mainline between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest. Canadian Pacific makes an appearance on its former Soo Line trackage with a variety of power from "Red Barn" SD40-2Fs to newly delivered AC4400s.

From jointed rail to ribbon rail, the Midwest offers a great variety of shortline and mainline action. It's all here for you in The Best of the Midwest Volume II!

Well i bought my 3 DVDs a while back individually. I was a bit disappointed in the programs. Now do not get me wrong here, Pentrex did get some great footage of some short lines on each of the DVDs, but some of the other footage left much to be desired in my opinion. How many bad angle shots of UP coal trains do we need in Kansas, or how many poorly shot runby scenes on the BNSF near Minneapolis do we need to see? For a Pentrex production, I expected a bit better quality program series.

Additional remarks by Richard Nelson:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Seemed a little high, but not too bad.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

Well these DVD's bring back lots of memories of growing up and traveling through the Midwest in the summer months to visit family in Minnesota!! I remember a lot of these lines when they were owned by fallen flags!!! Well let's start off by saying that Pentrex does an excellent job of bringing us up to date on a lot of these branch lines!!! We get excellent video which we come to expect from Pentrex and also a cab ride on an F unit on the Nebkota Railway on a section of the old CN&W cowboy line across Nebraska and South Dakota!!! These 3 volumes are excellent and i recommend these to any Railfan !!Great DVD's!!!! also pentrex says that volume 4 is coming in the future , can't wait for more Pentrex!!!!!!

Keep in mind that Volume 1 was made in 1998, Volume 2 was made in 1999, & Volume 3 was made in 2000. At the exact end of volume 3, there were plans to release volume 4, but unfortunately, that idea was scrapped along with plans of the blue mountains vol. 4 by video rails. However, with a mix of cab rides, freight switching, pre-merger units, and tourist operations, this is an incredible trilogy to enjoy for all diesel lovers everywhere.

Additional remarks by Steamboy:
Narration: Just enough.
Narration CAN be turned off in special features.
Would kids enjoy this? Yes.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it.
Recommend to others? Yes.
