Autumn in the Great Gorge Nickel Plate 765 DVD

A lush autumn journey on #765 Nickel Plate Berkshire through the Great Gorge of the New River in West Virginia. All #765!—in two crisply filmed excursions through the rich foliage, some 1000 feet below the farms of Fayette County, where much of the gorge is accessible only by rail. The intertwined history of coal and steam played out along these tracks.

Part 1 takes us from Huntington to Sulfur Springs, passing through Thurmond, home of the Dunglen Hotel where, in the early 1900s, coal barons and gamblers played a poker game rumored to have lasted for 13 years. In Part 2, #765 thunders from Huntington to Hinton, WV on a foliage tour with the local Huntington chapter of the NRHS.

Pristine footage of a rollicking journey full of railroading lore through the famous gorge. 37 min.

This title - NKP4 - completes the NKP series.

"Autumn in the Great Gorge-NKP 4" is an excellent DVD. Alot of interesting historial railroading information is presented about railroading through the Great Gorge of the New River in West Virginia. Part one of the video takes NKP Berkshire #765 on a run from Huntingdon to Sulfur Springs. Part 2 of the video take NKP Berksire #765 on a "Fall Foliage" tour from Huntington to Hinton, W.Va. The foliage scenery is beautiful and to watch NKP Berksire #765 strut-it's-stuff is awesome. Truly a magnificent locomotive!! The video was filmed sometime around 1986 and the only comment I could make to improve this DVD would be to do the same trip with NKP 765 and film it with a digital video camera. A modern digital recording would knock this DVD out of the park!

Additional remarks by dolomitedan:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? Definitely.
