All Aboard - The PBS Series Vol 9 on DVD by Green Frog

The Pennsylvania Railroad

Begining in the summer of 1952, Emery Gulash, highly respected railfan photographer, began capturing prolific amounts of activity on this well known railroad. This tape covers the time frame from 1952 to 1969 in color, the end of steam and the transition to first generation diesels. You'll see Decapods, Baldwin Centipedes, and Sharks, "F" units, early Geeps, GG-1's, and Alco RS-3's, just to name a few.

Rails to Steel City

Shot on video in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area in the late 1980s, the viewer will see five major railroads serving the freight needs of this region. The PAT commuter rail system is also featured, with it's 'push-pull' service utilizing F-7 diesels. This service was discontinued in 1989.
Many of the exciting running shots of the freight operations are from the Beaver Falls area. This rural area provides a rich setting for the heavily trafficked freight lines operating in the Allegheny Mountains. The rolling hills surrounding Pittsburgh provide outstanding views overlooking the city and it's railroad operations.

All Aboard videos are shortened versions of longer videos. 2 videos on one DVD. This video, the 2 segments are from the simular part of the USA, but from 2 different time frames of the diesel/electric age. Part # 1. The Pennsylvania will long be remembered as one of the great railroads of America. It was very enjoyable to see this historic institution in action. Name the power, or location, and you will be likely to see a bit in this video. Very enjoyable watching this segment of the video. Part # 2. Pittsburgh is truely a rail town. There is lots of rail action to be seen in this segment. Some very interesting footage like the "gone PAT trains". I thought that it was unfortunate that the video is a mere 26 minutes. There is so much around Pittsburgh that so much was missed. What is covered is well done. The price is right for an insight into the regions and time frames covered. I find that the All Aboard series of videos are real good for the educational purposes of understanding the topics covered, but to short for the real serious video collectors.
