Stretched against the sunning backdrop of Glacier National Park, Burlington Northern'stranscontinental mainline climbs up and over the rugged Rocky Mountains. One scenic splendor after another unfolds as long freight trains struggle up the mountain pass. It'sthe pre-merger days of the early 1990s and Pentrex is trackside to record the battle of trains and nature. The grandeur of the mountains is almost overwhelming as we explore the line from Whitefish, Montana to points east of Browning.

You ll see trains snake their way through the tunnels and along the banks of the wild middle fork of the Flathead River. Train after train rumbles through forests of aspen and larch decked out in glorious fall colors or struggles against winter'sstorms. After crossing over the high bridges and through the famous snow sheds, the trains work hard up the pass to crest the summit.

Marias Pass takes on a different look on the east slope. Wild, desolate country with ever-present mountains marks the high plateau. You ll see trains cross over Two Medicine Bridge and struggle upgrade through Grizzley. The solitude of Spotted Robe is broken as you watch a heavy grain train grind its way up the grade.

Burlington Northern and Mother Natures combine to make this stretch of railroad a place to be visited time and time again. No matter how often you ve been here before, you won t want to miss this vision of magnificent Marias Pass.

Being a fan of Marias Pass since I played MSTS as a kid, this video brings it to life. If you like cascade green locomotives working hard on mountain grades, this video is for you! The video also includes some beautiful snow scenes! This is a must have for any BN fan! 5/5

Mountain railroading is always a very interesting part of the industry. Marias Pass is another wonder of railroad action at it's finest. While it may be lacking in the height and steep grades of other mountain passes, in does not lack in scenic view points. Through western Montana, we are treated to a long gone parade of Burlington Northern's cascade green power, and a few extra's from other companies like the blue and yellow Santa Fe's. Rugged mountains and tall bridges make for a gorgeous backdrop of this famed mountain region. Add in some beautiful Vistas and Resorts at or near Glacier National Park really adds to the interest. Lots of tunnels and snow sheds are also seen along the way. Appearances by Amtrak's Empire Builder make a nice touch to the variety of trains. And we are also treated to some winter scenic beauty and trains battling the elements of Mother Nature. A great video presentation that I am pleased to have as a part of my collection. I know that all who purchase this video will be every bit as pleased.

Well chosen angles and settings in this scenic mountainous area capture rail action at a very high level through out all four seasons. Nice water level shots and snow shed coverage including one scene shot on top of a snow shed. One of Pentrex's best although slighty dated.

Had a tape copy in the past but bought again on DVD. The scenery is stunning and an inspiration for modelers of the North West region. Even though shot in 1991 the quality does the scenery justice. But its not just the scenery as in this period the mix of the trains make interesting viewing. Well worth buying, the content is one of the best.

I really enjoyed this video. I feel like it shows off the topic. The only thing it is lacking was a mention of a locomotive type in a couple of scenes. It's just too bad there are not more Burlington Northern videos available. It's like the BN got skipped! There's more BNSF stuff out there and it hasn't been around as long.

Across Marias Pass is a Pentrex video that documents the Burlington Northern railroad (once the Great Northern and now BNSF), crossing the Rockies in Montana circa 1991, working its way from Whitefish, MT west of Glacier National Park, along the southern boundary of the park, up the Flathead River, over Marias Pass, and on to Browning, MT east of the Rockies at the edge of the Great Plains.

Pentrex almost always does an excellent job, with great photography, plenty of trains, a logical order, clear narration, and just the right number of maps and scenic shots for orientation. You get your money’s worth, too (90 minutes on this video).

But here is what makes Across Marias Pass my all-time favorite:

• A busy, prosperous railroad with a variety of trains: intermodal, grain, lumber, automobiles, ore, mixed freight, and the Empire Builder;
• The wonderful scenery of Glacier National Park, the Flathead River, and Marias Pass;
• The green-and-white Burlington Northern locomotives that blended in so well with the evergreen forests – sorely missed by railfans since the BNSF merger of 1995;
• The variety of locomotives in 1991, an interesting transitional time: the GM SD40-2 and its relatives still predominated, but the GE Dash-8 had introduced a more modern look;
• Filming in two seasons: autumn, with the aspens at their golden peak, and winter, during a snowstorm that keeps getting stronger as you climb towards the pass;
• U.S. Highway 2 closely follows the railroad, providing excellent sites for photography but politely stays out of the picture (so you don’t have to watch zillions of cars and trucks passing by); and
• The single best image in any of my train videos: horses grazing in a field while snow falls and, across the river, a train roars upgrade thru the snow sheds – two things in this world that are as beautiful as they are useful, horses and locomotives.
